Below I outline ten quick and easy tips for improving your CV.<ol><li> Modern Template:</li></ol>Give your CV a fresh look with a modern template. Simple, clean designs are not only visually appealing but also easy to read. Many online platforms offer free templates, so you don't have to be a design expert. Too many doctor's CVs are cluttered and text heavy because we want to coney as much information as possible. There is no need for this and it will put you at a disadvantage if your CV is too much work to read.<ol start="2"><li> Clarity &amp; Accuracy:</li></ol>Ensure your CV is legible, well-organised and doesn’t have spelling, grammar mistakes or typos. Use clear headings, bullet points, and a consistent font throughout. Avoid clutter and make it easy for recruiters to find the information they need. Use bold font in key places to highlight certain points. Break things up visually and lead the reader to your key messages.<ol start="3"><li> Tailor to the Role:</li></ol>Customise your CV for each application. Highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to the specific position and company you're applying to. A one-size-fits-all approach isn’t optimal in today's competitive job market but you also do not need to completely re-write your CV every time. Usually you can get your CV to about 90% consistent with the last 10% tailored for the role / situation.<ol start="4"><li> Impactful Messaging:</li></ol>Shift the focus from job descriptions to impact. Describe what you did and the outcomes rather than what you were responsible for. If you can quantify your achievements, I would highly recommend including the numbers. For example, instead of saying you were "responsible for quality improvement projects" say you "led a cross-functional team assessing post operative care resulting in a 20% improvement in complication rates”.<ol start="5"><li> Tell a Story:</li></ol>Weave a thread or theme throughout your CV to tell a compelling story about your career journey. Whether it's clinical research, quality improvement, medical education, or leadership, make sure your experiences align with your chosen narrative. The reader should be able to understand your personal story and positioning from your CV. Some people call this a “personal brand”. Essentially, think about how you want the reader to picture you (beyond your role title and qualifications).<ol start="6"><li> Showcase Achievements:</li></ol>Highlight your key achievements prominently, even ahead of career summaries. The order of your CV will be different to an established leader in the industry who might use their most recent experience more prominently. As someone looking to transition to a new industry, your experience managing patients in clinic may be less interesting than your research experience or your experience on a medicines management board or your achievements in quality improvement projects (unless, for example, you are a cardiologist applying for an industry role in cardiology). Keep your education lower down in your CV as well. Your education is unlikely to be the deal maker or breaker unless there is something specificlaly relevant to the role you are applying for.&nbsp;<ol start="7"><li> Continuous Learning:</li></ol>Emphasise your commitment to continuous learning, professional development and growth. This shows your dedication to staying current in your field but also speaks to your future behaviours when transitioning to the industry where you will have a lot to learn and quickly.&nbsp;<ol start="8"><li> Keyword Optimisation:</li></ol>Some companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to scan CVs. Include industry-specific keywords relevant to the job you're applying for to increase your chances of passing through ATS scans. This is part of tailoring your CV. However, be careful not to include a plethora of buzzwords throughout the CV. The tailoring should be around the core content of the job description. For example, the job description may call for a “Dynamic leader in Cardiology”. In this example, I would emphasise cardiology experience and leadership experience. I would not include the word “dynamic”.<ol start="9"><li> Two-Page Rule:</li></ol>Keep your CV concise. Ideally, limit it to two pages and focus on your most recent and relevant experiences. If you have extensive experience, prioritise your last two roles and then write summary statements for previous positions. For example, you may have five years of experience as a middle grade doctor in several hospitals before becoming a consultant. I would summarise those five years into a single section rather than listing each position.<ol start="10"><li> Seek Feedback:</li></ol>Before sending out your CV, ask a trusted colleague, mentor, or career coach for feedback. Fresh eyes can catch errors, provide valuable insights, and help you fine-tune your messaging.&nbsp;<h2>Conclusion&nbsp;</h2>Your CV is a powerful tool that is often your first chance to land your key messages. By following these ten tips, you'll start to craft a modern, impactful CV that stands out to potential employers. Remember, your CV should not just list your qualifications; it should tell a story of your journey, your accomplishments, and your potential value to the company. However, I am yet to come across a dedicated and comprehensive training and development programme for Medical Affairs aligned to company strategy (there are some independent programmes offered e.g. with the Accreditation Council for Medical Affairs). This always baffled me given the inherently technical nature of the function, its contact with nearly every other key function within the business, its critical role in launch preparation / execution and the high levels of governance and compliance in pharma.&nbsp;One of the significant challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry is the skills gap in Medical Affairs, particularly as the field rapidly evolves. Hiring new talent to fill these gaps can be costly, both in terms of recruitment expenses and the time required for new hires to acclimate. Conversely, developing in-house talent presents several advantages. It allows for the cultivation of skills precisely aligned with the company's specific needs and culture, fostering a more cohesive and efficient team. Moreover, investing in existing employees' growth can boost morale and loyalty, reduce turnover rates, and ultimately be more cost-effective than continually recruiting external candidates. Traditional training approaches, often generalised and non-specific, fall short in equipping Medical Affairs professionals with the necessary depth and breadth of knowledge. Bespoke programs, designed to address these unique needs, become not only beneficial but essential.<h2>Building High-Performing Teams Through Deliberate Practice &amp; Continuous Learning</h2>A high-performing team in the Medical Affairs realm is the result of deliberate practice, structured training, and continuous feedback. For example, the experience of actually managing a global worldwide safety alert cannot be replicated by reading about it in a book. That said, it can be prepared for through scenario planning, case studies and technical training. This type of training goes beyond simple Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P.s) and can be the difference between an adequate reactive response and a world class proactive approach.In the dynamic landscape of pharmaceutical medicine, the importance of continuous learning cannot be overstated. A strong foundation in fundamental concepts, coupled with a growth mindset, is essential for Medical Affairs professionals to remain agile and informed in an industry marked by constant change and innovation. Embracing continuous learning ensures that these professionals stay at the forefront of scientific advancements, regulatory changes, and evolving market dynamics. For example, a study by the ACMA highlighted significant improvements in job performance and strategic alignment for professionals who underwent tailored training programs. A bespoke and comprehensive training program tailored to medical affairs professionals can enhance their multifaceted roles, which require a blend of scientific knowledge, strategic insight, and communication skills. By investing in such targeted training programs, pharmaceutical companies can not only boost the performance of their medical affairs teams but also improve retention rates, foster innovation, and ultimately enhance their competitive edge in the market.<h2>The Current Training Gap in Pharma</h2>Despite the evident benefits, many pharmaceutical companies have yet to fully embrace comprehensive, bespoke training programs for their Medical Affairs personnel. This investment ultimately contributes to the company's ability to innovate and maintain a competitive edge in the market.<h2>The Comprehensive Training Programme Outline</h2>A bespoke training program for Medical Affairs should include the following (and could include a lot more):<ul><li>Pharmaceutical Medicine Foundations: Covering the basics of drug development, regulatory frameworks, pharmacovigilance, biostatistics and medico-legal topics</li><li>Medical Affairs Foundations: Principles around how to run “basic” activities in Medical Affairs, such as advisory boards, medical education, events etc.</li><li>Wider Medical Functions: Overview of the diverse “sub-functions” in Medical Affairs such as Medical Information, Field Medical, Integrated Evidence Planning etc.</li><li>Advanced Medical Affairs Strategies: Product launch strategies, market access and health economics, field medical strategy, Advanced Stakeholder Engagement</li><li>Disease Area Training: Training specific to the disease area is usually well catered for but a comprehensive programme should integrate this</li><li>Scientific Communication Planning: Developing full sci comms plans including publication processes, Closed Loop Sci Comms (CLSC), Development of scientific narratives etc</li><li>Clinical Trial Management and Operations: Technical training around running clinical trials as a Medical Affairs associate.</li><li>Medical Affairs Leadership: Specific leadership capabilities for Medical Affairs such as budget management, deployment of field medical associates</li><li>General Leadership and Emotional Intelligence: Developing skills for effective team management, stakeholder engagement, and decision-making.</li><li>Commercial Understanding and Acumen: Alignment and understanding of commercial principles in marketing, sales, account management etc. will elevate the ability of Medical Affairs professionals to collaborate with their commercial counterparts.</li><li>Governance &amp; Compliance: This should go beyond simply training on SOPs but should include the rationale and the importance of working ethically and high levels of integrity.</li><li>Real-World Applications, Case Studies and Scenario Planning: Practical training using real-world scenarios and challenges faced in the Medical Affairs domain.</li></ul><h2>Conclusion</h2>The pharmaceutical industry is at a juncture where the adoption of comprehensive, bespoke training programs for Medical Affairs is crucial. Such investment in training is pivotal in driving innovation, enhancing patient care, and ensuring the effective translation of scientific advancements into clinical practice. Reimagining Medical Affairs Strategy Through the Lens of 'Total Strategy'In one of my early experiences as a team leader and direct line manager, I encountered a situation where a member of a different team suggested that my field associates needed to be "more strategic". When I asked them to clarify what they meant, they struggled to articulate their thoughts. Over the years, strategy has become somewhat of a buzzword, often thrown around without genuine understanding, leading to a "you'll know it when you see it" mentality. This ambiguity is partly attributable to the countless books written addressing various singular aspects of “business strategy”.In the dynamic landscape of healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, the role of Medical Affairs has evolved beyond traditional boundaries, necessitating a more holistic and adaptable approach to strategy. Drawing inspiration from the Dutch philosophy of “Total Football”, my concept of “Total Strategy” emphasizes flexibility, adaptability, and the importance of a multifaceted skill set. Total Strategy advocates for an approach where your mindset is fluid, and adaptability is key, mirroring the versatility seen in Total Football players who seamlessly switch positions as the game demands.This strategy transcends traditional rigid structures, encouraging leaders and teams to quickly analyse and respond to changing situations with creativity and holistic understanding. The concept of Total Strategy offers a fresh perspective on how Medical Affairs professionals can navigate the complex environment they operate in.Instead of thinking of strategy as a singular concept, usually associated with higher level company strategy, Medical Affairs leaders need to be able to understand the situation they are in and choose the right strategy. The fundamental principle of what strategy is remains the same across all domains (identifying your problem, understanding your objectives and choosing “where to play and how to win”) but understanding exactly which domain requires your attention at any given time will help you to excel and deliver positive impact at all times.The Essence of Total Strategy in Medical AffairsTotal Strategy in Medical Affairs is about deliberately applying strategic principles in various domains - from corporate vision to functional tactics, disease area dynamics, product lifecycle management, people leadership, and organisational culture. This approach demands a seamless integration of strategies across these domains to ensure agility and effectiveness. It requires an ability to analyse the situation to understand where key problems lie and which domain(s) of “strategy” to focus on. This is a skill needed at every level and will allow individuals to adjust their mindset and problem-solving skills to address the true problem statement.Below I highlight some key areas for consideration. Ultimately there will be any number of “strategies” you could work on and understanding which areas need your focus is critical. Being able to switch your mindset between them will allow you to address each problem with the right solution.<ol><li> Corporate / Company Strategy Alignment</li></ol>Medical Affairs, like any function, must align with the broader corporate strategy, contributing to overall organisational objectives while maintaining its unique voice and expertise. This alignment ensures that Medical Affairs activities are not only scientifically robust but also resonate with the company's vision and goals. Executive leadership will be focused on wider company objectives and making sure to have these in mind will allow an appropriate level of communication when engaging with them.<ol start="2"><li> Functional Strategy </li></ol>Medical Affairs will have its own functional strategy around evidence generation, external engagement, scientific communication etc. Choosing “where to play” and “how to win” in these functional domains will have interdependencies with other parts of the business. Medical affairs plays a leadership role across nearly all phases of development and commercialisation and its role in integrating strategies across functions like clinical development, regulatory compliance, market access, and patient advocacy is crucial. This integration ensures cohesive action plans that leverage cross-functional insights for impactful outcomes. Having a Total Strategy mindset and approach allows for seamless integration across functions.<ol start="3"><li> Disease Area and Product Strategy</li></ol>Medical Affairs professionals need to develop deep disease area expertise and product knowledge. This specialisation allows for strategic planning that anticipates market trends, addresses unmet medical needs, and navigates the product lifecycle from development through post-market surveillance. From here, developing disease area and product specific strategy should be integrated with wider functions, primarily Marketing and Market Access.<ol start="4"><li> People and Culture</li></ol>Medical Affairs, like all functions, must prioritise people development, leadership and team culture. This involves nurturing talent, fostering diversity and inclusion, and developing leaders who can adapt to various roles and challenge. There are specific technical capabilities that are required within Medical Affairs (such as clinical trial management and medical writing) but we should not overlook more general skills such as strategy development, leadership, communication etc. Having a bespoke people strategy is critical to ensure the long-term success of the organisation.<ol start="5"><li> Organisational Design</li></ol>When developing your Medical Affairs strategy, vision and objectives, you need to ensure that the structure is right to support high quality execution. Designing an appropriate medical structure and organogram will be critical in how you execute and operationalise your strategy.<ol start="6"><li> Other domains</li></ol>There are any number of different “domains” of strategy that might apply at an individual, team or company level. Understanding this will enable you to adjust your view point, your approach and your behaviours appropriately. This might be your “transition strategy” when moving into a new role or a “crisis management strategy” in the face of an unexpected emergency. There will also be overlap between domains with corporate strategy influencing functional strategy and disease area strategy being interdependent with&nbsp; (and so on) which stresses the importance of intellectual and learning agility for Medical Affairs professionals.A Call for Conversations and DebateThe application of Total Strategy in Medical Affairs is not just a theoretical exercise but a call to action for professionals in this field.
